Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens Review

The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens is currently Canon's fastest 28mm lens . And the only wider angle lens that is faster (wider aperture) is the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens . My first thought upon removing the 28 f/1.8 from the box was that it was very similar to the Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Lens...

Excellent Normal Lens for 1.6x crop DSLR

I bought this lens to go with my Canon 40D (1.6x crop). With 28mm focal length (equivalent to 50mm on full frame sensor), it had been served as my all-purpose lens since day one. Of course, 50mm f/1.4 on 5D are far better combination.
Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • fast/noiseless USM focus
  • sharp comparing to zoom lens
Cons:
  • Not sharp enough especially at f/1.8, has to use f/2.8 or above
  • Wish it has larger aperture like the Sigma f/1.4

Picture taker

Their is a little noticeable barreling around the sides, so be careful if straight lines are important. (As with all wide-angle lenses) Good balance, good size.
Pros:
  • Purchased this lens for my Rebel XSi
  • With the XSi all lenses have a 1.6 multiplying factor, so it looks like a 50mm on a film XLR
  • I wanted something fast for indoor photos without a flash
  • Focus is critical
  • Good color and detail when you set up the photo correctly.
Cons:
  • You have to force this lens f-stop down to get good depth of field
  • Some like the 'bokeh', I don't
  • I go for f10-14 on a tripod and I am happy

Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens Review

Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is one of the two (the other one being EF 28mm f/2.8) 28mm lenses in Canon's modern lineup. The lens was introduced back in 1995, and currently remains the fastest consumer oriented (read non L) wide angle offered by the company.

I have discovered a hidden gem in the canon EF lens lineup! The EF 28mm f/1.8 USM lens has never really received exceptional praise or glowing reviews. I honestly don't know why! On digital SLRs (namely full frame and 1.6x bodies) it's perfect for available light photography.
Pros:
  • F/1.8 is a definitely bonus
  • Fast AF
  • Decent build quality
  • Not too expensive
  • Works on any EF-Mount camera
Cons:
  • Could be a tad bit sharper wide open (fixable in post production however, Small amounts of CA can be seen at wide apertures (also correctable, Plastic vs
  • metal construction (personal preference

Let there be light

This lens is exactly what I hoped it would be: light, light, light. The 1.8 F-stop is simply amazing in low light. I took architectural photos at night; some of the shots were poorly lit by someone else and some were in nothing but half-moonlight. This lens picked up all the details like a champ.

REVIEW: Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens Review

Handling and features This classic wide angle prime from Canon provides a wide angle field of view, fast, silent focusing and a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. With this lens costing around £380, could it be the perfect budget solution for hand held low light shooting?

Canon EF 28 mm f/1.8 USM

One of the oldest lenses in the Canon's current line-up is an EF 28 mm f/1.8 USM model, as it was launched on the market in September 1995. Why the company doesn't see any need to introduce its successor
Pros:
  • good build quality
  • very good image quality in the frame centre (apart from the maximum aperture)
  • slight distortion
  • low level of vignetting on APS-C
  • silent and quick autofocus
Cons:
  • weak image quality at the maximum relative aperture
  • low resolution at the frame edge of an APS-C and full frame sensor alike
  • quite significant chromatic aberration
  • huge coma
  • unsatisfactory accuracy of the focusing mechanism

Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM - APS-C Review / Re-Test

The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM disappoints on the APS-C format. It is a full format lens yet the border quality leaves something to be desired even when stopped down. The fairly heavy amount of lateral CAs reduces the subjective quality perception even further.
