Post-apocalyptic stories usually agree on one thing: technological progress in such dire straits tends to slow to a glacial crawl. The heroes prowl about the wastes with tech that should have been outdated decades ago, and they refashion it to meet the needs of their generation and pray that it...
Excellent story writing; Meaningful choices; Rich party design options
Some unclear objectives; Heavy focus on specific skills
Despite a confusing and frankly dull first 30 minutes, " Wasteland 2 " soon expands out into a corking CRPG. It may not be the prettiest game out there, but for anyone with a brain, the deep and engaging combat and skill mechanics will draw you in and keep you playing throughout this sprawling game.
To say this game will have you thinking of Fallout constantly is an understatement. This is for obvious reasons. However, it's not this game's connections to the Fallout series that makes it a great purchase - Wasteland 2 simply performs exceptionally well.
+ Good sense of exploration; + Solid tactical battle implementation; + Highly immersive story telling
- Lack of control at key points in narrative; - Buggy auto-save can cause issues
Wasteland 2 , for the most part, provides everything that its Kickstarter backers and fans of the genre are looking for. It has genuine role-playing, a lot of exploration, solid tactical combat, and a long and satisfying campaign.
Wasteland 2 is proof that a Kickstarter funded game can be great. What inXile Entertainment did with the nearly $3 million in funds from Kickstarter is nothing but incredible and proof that a solid, fun gaming experience does not need a movie sized budget.
One of the biggest successes from the age of the Kickstarter is now out in the wild. Will backers be happy with how it turned out?
+ Engaging world; plenty of options; replay value; huge adventure
- Some of the combat can get a bit monotonous; as can levelling and inventory management
Wasteland 2 had two things every great Kickstarter campaign needs: nostalgia and a celebrity developer prepared to sever all ties corporate publishers. Has Brian Fargo delivered on the hopes of thousands of willing gamers? Ben Allen has the verdict.
Gigantic, well-built and evocative game world; Excellent voice acting; Solid turn-based combat system; Chock full of weighty moral choices with both emotional and story consequences
A bit dated graphically and in one or two mechanical ideas
Wasteland 2 ($39.99) is a return to the classic computer RPG (CRPG) conventions that have been largely absent in the contemporary gaming scene. CRPGs have seen a recent resurgence with the release of Divinity: Original Sin and Shadowrun, and developer InXile Entertainment has followed suit with a...
Choices have significant impact on the game world; Beefy story.
Simplistic combat; Uninspired character models.
