Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition review – rebooting the console?war

A great cinematic action adventure, with one of gaming's great lead performances, although its Tomb Raider DNA seems fragmented and even degenerative in parts.

Fantastic production values with excellent combat and a large and interesting game world; A genuinely sympathetic protagonist; Improved graphics are better than ever

The focus on combat may frustrate franchise fans; Mediocre script and one-dimensional secondary characters; No substantial new features for a so-called definitive edition

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Review

With 2013 behind us, next-generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles in our homes, and a little bit of extra cash to squeeze out of the latest Tomb Raider game, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have thrown everything they have at Lara Croft and come up with a damn gorgeous game.

Lara Croft; Tomb Raider; Platforming and traversal gameplay; Tight third-person shooting and combat; Hidden Tombs; Stories discovered in collectibles; Pacing and variation in gameplay

Tacked-on; passable multiplayer; KILL ALL THE MEN

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Review: Lara's PS4 debut is a shining triumph

Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider revival last year wasn't just a monumental success in terms of sales and critical reception; it re-established one of gaming's most iconic heroines in Lara Croft, making the dexterous archaeologist relevant once again after a major career lull.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Review (PS4)

We definitively define if this version of Tomb Raider is definitive enough.

So pretty; Both Lara and the improved visuals, Game runs more smoothly than PS3 version, Campaign has good variety and balance, DLC is included

Dualshock 4 speaker is jarring on menus; Voice-controls are passable; Full retail price tag on a game that's been out for nearly a year

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Review

Examining ancient relics is just one small aspect of an archeologist's job. Sure, in-depth knowledge of deceased civilizations is important, but much less so than mastery of a deadly bow or a knack for a quick recovery after a bloody fight.

Gorgeous visual design; Lara Croft is a well-developed character with believable progression; Fast-paced; varied combat is endlessly exciting; Exploring the beautiful environments is a peaceful diversion from combat; Slowly unlocking new tools encourages you to further explore past sections

Gratuitous death sequences; Uninteresting plot and secondary characters

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Review

This really the Definitive Edition of Tomb Raider, but only because of the graphical overhaul. If you had issues before with the direction in which Crystal Dynamics have taken the character, or with the occasional intrusion of gameplay elements like levelling up and Lara's ability to carry six...

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Despite what Square Enix told their shareholders last year, Crystal Dynamics's Tomb Raider reboot was far from a failure. It's a frustratingly unfocused experience built on a skeleton of promising but unripened ideas.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition Review

Tomb Raider is a fantastic solo adventure. Admittedly, I couldn't help but wish my first experience with Tomb Raider was the Definitive One. If you come into Tomb Raider, this "Definitive Edition, thinking that it's anything more than a shinier port, you'll likely leave disappointed.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

At pretty much no point when I was playing Tomb Raider on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 a year ago did I stop and say to myself, "man, I only wish this looked better." Lara Croft's excellent, cinematic reboot adventure doesn't need extra special effects to make it worth playing.

Even more beautiful; Great combat; Exciting pacing; Relatable Lara

Boring multiplayer

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Review

We're in an era of reboots in the greater gaming universe, that's for certain, and games like Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition are taking the term as lightly as possible in an upgrade from one year to the next.
