At pretty much no point when I was playing Tomb Raider on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 a year ago did I stop and say to myself, "man, I only wish this looked better." Lara Croft's excellent, cinematic reboot adventure doesn't need extra special effects to make it worth playing.

Last year's Tomb Raider reboot was a beautiful release for both PC and consoles. It stretched the ageing Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 to their limits, and also provided PC gamers with one of the year's greatest spectacles.

Lara was reborn last year. She's been on the scene long enough to be one of the artefacts she spends her life seeking, but with the 2013 prequel Lara earned back her title as one of gaming's greatest icons.

It can all sound like a lot in print, but the parity between being able to explore on your own and always having a clear directive to follow works well throughout. In fact, pretty much everything about Tomb Raider checks out.

I was reluctant to pay full price for Tomb Raider Definitive Edition when it released, despite all of the DLC it came with, as I'd never got in to the Tomb Raider series before. In the end, I got it for around ￡25 in an XBL sale.

If you passed on 'Tomb Raider' when it released earlier in 2013, or opted to hold out for the Definitive Edition, now is a great time to experience this incredible franchise reboot; highly recommended on a current gen console.
