Sony should have never released this lens with the Nex 7. This is a cheapo lens that produces cheapo images and certainly isn't good enough for the sensor in either the Nex 7 or 6. I'm waiting for the new Zeiss 16-70

The AF performance is pretty good for a contrast detection system (albeit highly dependent on the base camera). AF operations are basically noiseless. Manual focusing works "by wire" so the focus ring is not directly coupled to the focus gears but to the AF motor.
The Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens ($219.99 direct) is the standard zoom lens that is bundled with Sony D-SLR cameras . In that context it's not that bad of a lens-you're either paying nothing for it, or a $100 premium over a body-only price-but on its own there aren't any compelling reasons to...
Lightweight; Internal focus motor
Soft images; Distortion; Rotating front element.
It is unfair for me to compare this to lenses like 24-70/2.8 ZA but I cannot stop doing so. Good kit lens for the price and a better lens than newer 16-50
Inexpensive; build quality
small aperture
Sony isn't the first manufacturer to talk about making a large-sensor mirrorless camera for compact users but it is the first to actually follow the thinking through with a system designed from ground up for the 'point and shoot' crowd.
Small; innovative designs that are still comfortable to hold; High resolution sensor with excellent High ISO performance (in PASM modes; Good JPEG output quality; Great build quality (particularly NEX-5; Metal barrelled lenses feel impressive compared to peers; Tiltable high-resolution screen,...
High ISO capability (a major advantage of its large sensor) unavailable in iAuto mode; Constant overexposure of images wastes highlight capabilities (and no exposure compensation to correct it in iAuto mode; Consumes battery quickly if you use the screen a lot between shots; Poor shot-to-shot times...
The lens was advertised as new. It was received in a tattered box. There was no rear lens cap. There were two large scratches on the barrel. All of this says it was a used lens. I am returning the lens. I checked the return address and it belongs to a ramshackle building in Brooklyn, NY.
Overall, I like this lens. It is well built with a nice, machined type feel to it's metal surface. It zooms in and out smoothly and accurately. Seems to take nice photos with sharp, accurate colors.
Machined Alloy Feel.
Plenty of barrel distortion and pincushioning at each end of lens
Great camera. I have never had something like it. All I can say is amazing. The picture quality is awesame. I can capture just like I see with my own eyes, even in the dark place. This sounds so simple but not many manufacture have successfully done it. Thank you Sony!! I'm totally satisfying.
Compact Design; Easy To Use; Improves Picture Quality; Interfaces Well With Camcorder
I bought this lens almost 1 month ago. This zoom lens is sharp enough. Its optical result is over its price. A real good lens, with camera daily. But the aperture is a little low.
I've had this lens for four years now, it's been all over Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, etc.) with me and my Sony NEX7 - I have LOVED every second of shooting with this camera.
