Sony A7C II Body Silver - Brand New review

It's easy to get carried away and lose sight of just how far we've come in the smartphone world. Apple's iPhone 14 is 7.8 millimeters thick but can communicate directly with satellites, boasts photographic talents that eclipse dedicated cameras and action cams, and does so starting at just $799.

Improved low-light camera performance, Clever safety features (you hope you won't need)

Improvements feel evolutionary, eSIM may prove a headache, iPhone 13 offers much the same for $100 less

Sony A7C II Body Silver - Brand New review

The iPhone 14 is very similar to the iPhone 13, which itself was very similar to the iPhone 12. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad phone — it’s just less of an upgrade for anyone using a phone that’s only two years old.

Sony A7C II Body Silver - Brand New review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue

Sony A7C II Body Silver - Brand New review

The full-frame Sony a7C II may be small in size, but it offers a full suite of features for both still and video shooting. Image and video quality are excellent, and its autofocus system is one of the best on the market.

Travelers who want high-end capabilities in a small package. Those shooting erratically moving subjects with point-and-shoot ease-of-use.

Photographers shooting 4K video or high-speed bursts that involve panning the camera.

Sony a7C II review: small camera, little compromise

The full-frame Sony a7C II may be small in size, but it offers a full suite of features for both still and video shooting. Image and video quality are excellent, and its autofocus system is one of the best on the market. The viewfinder resolution is low for a camera in this price range, and rolling shutter can be a real issue when capturing video.

Travelers who want high-end capabilities in a small package. Those shooting erratically moving subjects with point-and-shoot ease-of-use.;

Photographers shooting 4K video or high-speed bursts that involve panning the camera.;

Sony A7C II Body Silver - Brand New review

With the second-gen A7C there are far fewer compromises than with the first model, delivering an exceptional full-frame experience in a compact, portable and lightweight design.

Great-looking and compact/portable design, Powerful video capabilities, Object, animal and person tracking is fantastic, Quick and accurate autofocus, Plug-and-play webcam capability

Pretty expensive, Only one SD card slot

Sony A7C II Body Silver - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.

Sony A7C II review: Minor updates on the outside, big improvements inside

With the latest Sony processing systems, including real-time AI recognition and video features previously reserved for the top-of-the-range Sony Alpha cameras, the travel-friendly A7C II becomes a serious alternative to the larger A7 IV. The jump to 33 million-pixel resolution takes it further away from the ZV-E1, which has a similar rangefinder-style design but a much lower-resolution 12 million-pixel sensor, as it’s primarily designed for video use. The A7C II is a powerful, lightweight full-frame camera, and unlike its predecessor there’s little compromise; you’re getting all the good stuff Sony currently offers in a small full-frame camera. My only criticism would be that the electronic viewfinder could still be larger, and a full-size HDMI port would be excellent. However, both of those additions would impact the camera's size, which is one of its key selling points.

Real-time AI subject recognition and tracking; Small and light full-frame camera; Excellent video features

EVF could still be bigger; Currently more expensive than the A7 IV; New processing systems impact battery life

Sony A7C II Body Silver - Brand New review

Slightly better cameras but otherwise, not much of an update - buy the iPhone 14 Pro or switch to Android instead

Better low-light photography, Slightly longer battery life, Action mode gives super stabilised video

The same performance as the iPhone 13, No Dynamic Island or Always-On display, 60Hz screen
