With an equivalent length of 600mm at the telephoto end, this lens is great for getting in close
This super-telephoto zoom from Panasonic covers a range equivalent to a 200-600mm lens on a 35mm camera, focuses internally, includes optical image stabilisation and costs around £460.
When I first tried this lens I was a little disappointed but as I've got used to it I've come to rate this little lens. Optics are very good. I would say it is a little short sighted it does a better job when objects are closer.
good optics in a small package
stabilisation doesn't work as well as Nikon's VR
I use this on my new Olympus PEN-F. Awesome optical performance! Sharp and contrasty images even at 300 mm. Great price for the performance. A plain Jane lens in the looks department. The zoom ring is not as smooth as I would like.
Focal lengthThe focal range is really amazing: 200 to 600mm equivalent in 35mm-film terms.
Relatively small/light for what it would be in 35mm film equivalent; fast autofocus
Need to stop down as you approach the 300mm end to boost sharpness; weak OIS
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Fast / accurate auto-focus; Lightweight
At the 100mm end of the zoom range, the lens has a diagonal angle of view of 12°, equivalent to that of a 200mm lens in a 35mm system.
I bought this to use with a GH2 (and now G5 as well) for wildlife. It has an equivalent field of view to a 200-600mm lens in "full frame" terms and as a result is a very versatile addition to my kit.The AF is fast, completely internal (no rotating bits on the outside) and very quiet.
Durable; Excellent Stabiliser; Great Features; Great Picture Quality; Lightweight; Quiet Af; Simple Controls
Hunts At Lower Contrast
For years, I've used a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 APO DG OS HSM to cover the 180-600mm range and that combo is unbearably heavy and the Sigma lens is a bit of a dog, it takes crackingly sharp pictures at f11/f13 but it's undesirably soft wide open and it hunts around awful with many...
I end up having my most stunning images with this lens. Whether it is a wild animal, the full moon or a portrait, I end up with incredible results and a nice depth of field. I don't know how, but the objects in this image are much more detailed and real than using a 12-35mm Panasonic.
