Olympus ED 50mm f/2.0 Macro review

This Four Thirds lens has 'macro' on the side but only a 1:2 magnification ratio. It relies on the 2x crop factor to bring objects up to size. Despite this, the 50mm lens feels more like a 100mm on Olympus bodies, giving it an ideal focal length for macro tasks.

Olympus 50mm f/2.0

As part of the Four Thirds system, Olympus lenses effectively double equivalent focal lengths, so this lens offers a similar angle of view as a 100mm lens on the E-system cameras. One of advantages of this is that lenses are much smaller than their 35mm or APS-C compatible equivalents.

Small; fast aperture; sharp and low fringing

No ratio scale; no focus limiter

The Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 50mm 1:2.0 Macro was one of the very first Four Thirds system lenses, announced along with the launch of the E-1 back in June 2003. With an unusually fast maximum aperture for a macro lens, it's described as a dual purpose optic also suitable for portraits; indeed it's...

Superb image quality even wide open - sharp; distortion-free with no lateral CA; Compact and lightweight compared to similar lenses for larger formats; Fast maximum aperture for a macro lens

Unrefined autofocus motor and no focus range limiter switch; Susceptible to flare with bright light sources in the frame; Bokeh chromatic aberration at wider apertures; No macro ratio scale

VERY GOOD LENS

I purchased this lens about 5 months ago, and have used it on my E-500, OMD E-M5, and the E-5. This is really a fantastic lens; colors really Pop off the screen (or print), Contrast is corner to corner, and I see no distortion. And the bokeh is impressive.

too sharp sometimes

It's enough to say this lens is belong to Super High Quality grade from Olympus. The lens is very sharp and sometimes too sharp. hard to PP because of the sharpness so you need to add more sharpness if you resized the photo or just crop 100% and you'll be fine.

What a lens!

This is possibly the best telephoto lens - ever. It's performance is great, even autofocus which is traditionally not the best on Olympus cameras works very well on E-5. Lens is extremely sharp and detailed with beautifully smooth bokeh and great color and contrast.

Great optics, precision focus and great quality ,will meet your macro needs

Was listed as "as is" but it showed up looking like new. The lens is a great for macro and portrait shots...I bought this as I wanted a lens specifically for macro photography. This fits in nicely. It is compact and precise..will have more to say once I get more use of it!
