After reading the reviews, and recognizing there is little cost between the 1.4 and the 1.7x, I decided to get the 1.7 for my 70-200. My goal was primarily taking pictures of birds, and I knew I had to get closer to get better shots than I was getting.
I have not tried the new 2x but I've heard the 1.7 was the best overall lens and I can say it works perfect for me. no distortion, f stop is still fine for any thing outdoors or well lit indoors.
I bought a TC-17E II as a used product from a respected online vendor. After using it with my Nikkor 200-500mm zoom lens for a bit over a year I came to the conclusion that perhaps the converter needed to be serviced, so I sent it back to Nikon and they found the converter to meet factory standards,...
Attached to the Nikon 105mm f/2.8 G ED VR macro lens, I get super sharp images without loss of detail. When taking the shot of the first attached image, my hands are a bit shaky, but the VR of the 105mm lens was able to recover and gave me a blur free image.
It was hard enough justify $1600 on a 70-200 2.8 VR lens, spending $5500 for a 200-400 F4 VR was out of the question. Still there are times when 200 isn't quite enough reach to get the picture you want. The $420 for a TC-17E was a compromise that I could live with.
Extends focal length of certain Nikon lens by a factor of 1.7 at a cost of 1.5 F stops; Makes a 70-200 2.8 a 120-340 4.8.
Works with a limited number of Nikon's catalog of lens
I would rate the 1.4TC as the only TC that will yield excellent results across the board. The 1.7 is a good compromise, but dont expect it to yield tack-sharp results on every lens. You need to stop many lenses down at least two stops when using this TC to achieve max sharpness.
Good reach; works flawlessly with top-quality glass
Not as sharp as 1.4TC
Very nice accessory for a relatively fast lens (2.8 or less). Somewhat expensive, but excellent optical clarity. A great way to nearly double your reach with only a small penality in light loss.
The converter is very easy to use, and with Nikon's modern lenses it enables all functions; Optics are excellent, and very little is lost in sharpness; The 1.7 is a very nice middle ground between the 1.4 and the 2.0.
The converter is expensive; and a little inconvenient if you are in a hurry
like a lot of photographers, I'm looking to cut down on carrying everything including the kitchen sink. this lens takes up very little space but it packs a punch. Its the first thing into the holdall. Should have bought it years ago.
Durable; Easily Interchangeable; Lightweight; Rugged; Strong Construction
