Mario Party Superstars review: The do-over fans deserve
Mario Party Superstars is a much-needed do-over for the multiplayer series. It so effectively learns from the successes and failures of previous Mario Party games that it almost feels like it should be its final entry. We’ve reached Mario Party’s ceiling. At its core, it’s a back-to-basics nostalgia trip that revives the spirit of the original Nintendo 64 classics. But beyond that, it salvages moments of brilliance hidden within the series’ weakest installments. It treats the Nintendo 3DS’ Mario Party: The Top 100 (a game that featured old minigames, but ditched the actual board game) as an awkward mulligan and gets its “best of” compilation idea right. Most importantly, it’s a second chance for the series on Nintendo Switch after Super Mario Party’s potential was squandered by a lack of post-launch support. Mario Party Superstars is the best Mario Party game ever, even if by default. The curated nature of it means that players get the best — and most — minigames the series has to offe...

- High-quality minigames
- Addictive bonus modes

Mario Party Superstars (for Nintendo Switch) Review
Mario Party Superstars may bring back fond memories of Nintendo's mini-game franchise, but being from the past doesn’t automatically make it a blast. Nintendo has released nearly a dozen Mario Party games since 1998; even more if you count the spin-off titles. The mini-game collections follow the faux board game format so exactly they start to blur together. However, Mario Party has changed enough over the years that you might be nostalgic for the franchise’s early Nintendo 64 and GameCube entries. Mario Party Superstars offers a select crop of those classic boards and mini-games as a new, $59.99 Nintendo Switch game. However, unless you’re a die-hard Mario Party fan, the content-lite Superstars feels more like a pleasant, fleeting memory instead of a full-on blast from the past. You Get Older, Mario Party Stays the Same The idea of a Mario Party game recycling old Mario Party content is, itself, a recycled idea. A few years ago, Nintendo released Mario Party: The Top 100, a compilation for the Nintendo 3DS. However, as a digital board game, Mario Party works much better as a social multiplayer home console experience rather tha...

- Features online play and progression
- Updated visuals
