Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze's addition of Funky Mode makes it more accessible without reducing the formidable platforming difficulty to a walk in the park. There's still a lot of challenge, even with the extra help Donkey's Funky uncle affords.

Nintendo's marketing strategy of rereleasing slightly altered versions of critically acclaimed Wii-U games for the Switch continues on with the re-release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Switch.
Tropical Freeze is a pinnacle of modern 2D platform games, offering an immense challenge while improving on the original, much revered original trilogy. Funky Kong's inclusion is clearly well-intentioned.
Everything about this game is perfect. The fact that its hard and i wont beat it in a day or 2 while working two jobs like i did mf mario oddesy makes its better.
We didn't quite remember how difficult Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was, or perhaps we're a bit embarrassed to admit it took us a few hours this time to master a game we'd beaten already four years ago.
Nintendo has been slowly but surely breathing new life into their Wii U library by porting it over to the Nintendo Switch. The latest game to get this treatment is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze .
Framerate and resolution are improved; Game is still fabulous; Funky Kong is pretty useful
Not much has changed; Funky makes the game too easy; No idea why ‘lives' are still a thing
If you crave a challenge, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will bring out the best of your platforming abilities. Those expecting a cakewalk will feel like they slammed headfirst into a brick wall of difficulty.
Great presentation; with lush graphics and charming music; Incredibly challenging; but never feels unbeatable; New Kongs encourage different playstyles
Will simply be too difficult for some tastes; Co-op play is a disappointment
Funky Port.
Excellent level design; Superlative soundtrack; Quick load times; Runs well
Sub native resolution in handheld mode; Not much for returning players
This review is based on a download code provided by the publisher. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be available in retail and digital stores on May 4, 2018 for $59.99. The game is rated E for everyone.
A highly competent 2D platformer, but one so utterly devoid of any new ideas it's really only for the nostalgic and those desperate to play something new(-ish) on the Switch.
Extremely well-designed levels and some masterfully orchestrated mine cart stages; Good use of a 3D camera to enhance 2D gameplay; Great music
Painfully predictable from the very first moment; Visually unremarkable and with some very dull secrets and special abilities; Unfairly expensive
