This lens is built like a tank and being a metal body, I found it to be lighter than I expected. I use it mainly for macro and having a bit more working distance from my subject is a bonus for me over the 100mm I used previously.
What is there to say about this lens that hasn't been said before. It is a fantastic macro lens if you are a canon shooter. It can hunt for focus a bit at close range on non-contrasty subjects, but is very sharp and a fun lens to shoot with.
Sinds 'n halfjaar toegevoegd aan mijn andere macrolenzen, de 100mm IS en de MP E 65. Is een aanrader, zeker als je buiten macro opnames wilt maken. Kwaliteit is uitmuntend
"I bought this on reading reviews and a recommendation from a macro photographer. It is a VERY sharp lens. Much better than my old 100 mm. Although not IS, it is handholdable with sufficient shutter speed. A bit of hunting in lower light situations.
This EF 180mm f/3.5 L macro is Canon's sharpest lens. While all Canon lenses are sharp, if you like to split pixels and try to force lenses into situations where you can see slight differences in sharpness, no other Canon lens is as sharp as this one.
Wonderful lens, sharp, brilliant! Good feeling in your hands, fast autofocus, although I prefer manual focussing for extreme closeups! Canon quality and in my opinion much better than Sigma 180mm!

The EF 180mm Macro f/3.5L USM ($1,579 list) is a telephoto prime lens for Canon cameras that features macro shooting capability. At its closest focusing distance it supports 1:1 magnification, which means that an object in the image frame will be projected onto the camera's sensor at its actual size. The lens can also be used as a standard telephoto optic—there's a switch on the side of the barrel that allows you to choose between the full focus range for autofocus or to only try and focus on objects that are close to the front element of the lens. One downside to using the lens as a handheld telephoto optic is the lack of image stabilization—something that the similar Sigma 150mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro($1,489.00 at Amazon) does include. The lens is very long, but not overly wide—it measures 7.3 by 3.3 inches and is heavy at 2.4 pounds. A tripod collar, which wraps around the lens near its base, is included. It's a good idea to use it rather than your camera's tripod socket,...
The EF 180mm Macro f/3.5L is a sharp telephoto macro lens for Canon D-SLRs. It supports 1:1 magnification, but lacks image stabilization.

This is a fantastic lens if you photograph 'garden' wildlife like insects and so on, because a long macro lens gives you more working distance with high magnification. It is very well built, and has a very nice balance on a pro body, but the benefit for me kind of stops here.
