The ATH-E40 comes in a small, pudgy box, lacking the opulent appearance of the higher-end IM-series. But underneath that unimpressive facade, just what kind of earphone are we dealing with?

I was in love once. Her name was ATH-IM70 and and her honey dripping tones enchanted me. One day, she passed away and I moved on to the ATH-M40x. It was not the same. I flirted with the ATH-LS70is and the MSR7 but none could quite get there (The MSR7 got really close though).
Beautiful balanced sound; good clarity; detachable cable; decent carry case; engaging sound signature
Not for bassheads; not the most comfortable IEMs in the world; it will break your heart when it stops working
After putting these ear-buds through their pace in a variety of different genres of music. I was able to come to the conclusion that these are great headphones for the price. They sound great, although if you want an overwhelming amount of bass, these aren't the headphones for you.
Used these as IEMs for the first time last weekend while playing bass. Sound was crisp, low was punchy but not over-bearing. Highs were clear. Comes with 4 sizes of pads, the pre-fitted ones were a good fit for me and they didn't slip out once.
After receiving the head phones I first tried them out on my iPhone with great results. After letting the drummer in my band use them as monitors he said they were great and was blown away when I told him I bought them from Walmart.
Of course AT is always building nice quality headphones and microphones, I've got the chance to prove that. I'm an audio engineer and have been using AT products for more than 5 years.
ATH-E40 and the rest of series are very less spoken / discussed IEMs all over Internet - Almost NIL decent review when I Google and even in the Headfi - Don't know why ? Anyhow I like to mention here this E-40 for definite upgrade for those people who own the IM50 / IM70 in the past (or still own...
Just opened the box and plugged in the Audio-Technica ATH-E40 and straight away worked out that the money was more then well spent. Hooked them up with my fantastic Fiio X3, now your going to say both in the world of quality that both are some what..
