Sony WF-1000XM4 review: The wireless earphones offer noise cancellation, adaptive sound among a host of features. Here's how they perfo...
Sony’s eagerly anticipated follow-up to its very highly rated WF-1000XM3 noise-canceling true wireless earbuds is finally here. The WF-1000XM4 cost $280, and they address even our very few critiques of the XM3 with a laundry list of improvements — some big, some small. Has Sony once again established a new benchmark for the true wireless world, or does it still have some work to do? Let’s get into it. Editor’s note: Sony updated the WF-1000XM4 in March 2023 with new firmware that enables Bluetooth Multipoint. It hasn’t changed our score, but we’ve updated this review to reflect the enhancement. First of all, big props to Sony for creating packaging that should be adopted as an industry standard. The XM4 come in a tiny box that eschews all the flashy labeling and glossy prints you’ll see on boxes from companies like JBL and Soundcore. As a result, every piece can be recycled or composted. The only hint of plastic is in the thin exterior wrapping band that holds the two halves of the box...
Great sound quality; Good battery life; Excellent noise cancellation; Wireless charging;
May not fit small ears; Slightly lacking in high-end detail;
If you want the best true wireless earphones, the Sony WF-1000XM4 has to be in the discussion amongst the most popular models. It has its foibles, but it's probably the most mature stab at the true wireless design that includes ANC. Still, the price is tough to surmount.
360 Reality Audio support, Excellent Isolation, ANC, Foam ear tips
Price, Out-of-the-box sound a little wonky
Sony has shrunk its top model a lot. The WF-1000XM4 is a pair of really good earbuds. If you adjust them correctly.
Very stable connection, excellent speech sound and fabulous noise reduction. Pleasant, rich sound on music. Opens at the top with good audio codecs.
In excess subdued in the top register with SBC. Make sure you prioritize sound quality over app stability. 5-band graphic EQ in the app is a bit scarce.
The WF-1000XM4 true wireless ANC earbuds are Sony's follow-up to the wonderfully reviewed WF-1000XM3 and a worthy successor in every way featuring a smaller design, better battery life, and the same great sound and active noise cancellation.
Sony first released its WF-1000XM3 earbuds nearly two years ago, and though they offered some of the best noise cancellation and sound quality you could find at that time, a lot has changed since.
Best noise cancellation in true wireless earbuds, Excellent, detailed sound, New leader in battery life among competition
No Bluetooth multipoint, Microphone performance could still be better, Only three sizes of ear tips included
Despite some niggles, when it comes to sound quality, the Sony WF-1000XM4 IEMs have all bases covered.
I would highly recommend the Sony WF-1000XM4 for everyone who listens to music while commuting. The design is improved, the fit is more comfortable, and the price is reasonable for the kind of ANC technology it is offering.
Excellent and natural noise cancellation and ambient sound, Supports EQ controls, Speak-to-Chat helps in sudden conversations, Improved design and ergonomics
Unable to adjust volume and playback controls under the same function set, Average voice call quality
Sony's true wireless WF-1000XM4 earphones pair excellent audio performance with class-leading active noise cancellation.
Exceptional active noise cancellation, Powerful bass depth and crisp, defined highs, Adjustable EQ, Good battery life
Expensive
“With an all-new design and tons of improvements, they're very hard to beat.”
Great sound quality, Good battery life, Great noise cancellation, LDAC Bluetooth codec, Wireless charging
May not fit small ears, Slightly lacking in high-end detail
