Lens Test: Sigma APO 50-150mm f/2.8

At first glance, the new Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC ($680, street) appears to possess an unusual focal length range. But when you do the math, multiplying by a 35mm lens-conversion factor of 1.4X, it becomes a more familiar-sounding 70-210mm equivalent.

Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM APO review by climber

I used to be an owner of a Sigma 50-150mm f2.8, before i got Tokina 50-135mm f2.8. Sigma had problems with front focusing, so i sent it back to service. They somehow managed to adjust the focusing, but after using it for a year I sold it, because the image quality of Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 was not...

HSM motor; EX built quality

focusing issues; image quality is just average

Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 APO EX DC HSM

Sigma's innovative approach to its lenses continues here with this addition to the DC range of cropped sensor only lenses. Designed to fit where the popular 70-210mm models fitted in on 35mm/full frame, we take a look at how it performs.

Excellent optical performance; Very good handling with fast AF; Compact with a supplied hood

Slight fall-off in resolution at the longest focal length; Distortion just noticeable at 150mm

50-150 mm f/2.8 APO EX DC HSM

Originally posted 2006-10-31 on Optyczne.pl Recently we published a review of Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8 EX APO DG HSM Macro - the lens that has good reputation among many users. This is big, solid instrument designed for full frame cameras so we were not surprised that it performed well on APS-C DSLRs.

poor image quality at the edge for 150 mm; chromatic abberation should be smaller in APO lens; noticable astigmatism for focal length range from 100 to 150 mm; clear vignetting especially at 150 mm; significant front-focus with Canon 20D

Sigma 50-150 MM F/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM Lens

The new Sigma APO 50–150mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM designed especially for APS-C size image sensors is a fast f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens with a focal length equivalent to 75–225mm in 35mm format. Un-boxing it you have the well-padded sturdy case that comes with every Sigma lens in this range.

Fixed f/2.8 aperture; Four stops OS; Pro focal range; Lightweight for a telephoto

Too large for most hobbyists; Only for crop sensor; Vignetting
