If you shoot a lot at wide apertures (1.4 to 2.8) no 50 can beat it. I\'m still amazed when I chimp my images. As an old Leica-M shooter, I have a style that relies on lenses in the 28mm to 75mm range. My basic lens is the 18-35 Art, and this 50 is my \"long\" lens.
Unbelievably sharp, even wide open; Great colour; Good (not great) bokeh; Very well made, like all Art series lenses; Balances well on a D7100 with grip
Can\'t use the outer focus points on Nikon D7100; Heavier than a Nikon 50/1.4; The temptation to use wide apertures close up will test your focus discipline
I use this on my Canon 6d. This is by far the sharpest lens I've ever used. It doesn't focus as sharp on the outer edges. When you use your outer focus points, it struggles to keep up with Canon's L series lenses.
Bokeh; Focus Response; Quality build; Sharpness
Blurry On Edges; Heavy
Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens , which we reviewed in August 2008 has been joined by a serious alternative that complies with the high standards of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series of lenses.
I have multiple canon lenses most with L rating. Depending on usage this sigma art lens blows them all away. A few months ago I took the photographs for my daughters wedding using only this lens on full frame camera. Excellent results. It stays on one of my cameras all the time now.
"I mainly use my Canon mount lenses for wedding videography but I'm a photography enthusiast as well. This lens produces gorgeous video and photographs paired with a 5D Mark iii. I have a lot of glass, including Canon L glass, but I keep reaching for this lens the most often.
Sigma has been the darling of the lens world recently, producing high-performance products at reasonable prices. Its latest is the 50mm f/1.4 Art series lens, a long awaited addition to their line that we recently had the pleasure of trying out. You're not going to find much more lens for the price.
This is an in-depth review of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art prime lens that was announced on January 6, 2014 for Sigma SA, Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony A mounts. Ever since Sigma announced its new "Art" lens line, it has been releasing superb new lenses and updates.
Gary Wolstenholme reviews this new premium 50mm lens from Sigma, with a bright f/1.4 aperture.
Outstanding sharpness in the centre at f/1.4; Outstanding sharpness across the frame when stopped down; Good build quality; Virtually no CA or distortion; Fast; silent focusing; Reasonably priced when compared to similar alternatives
Quite large and heavy for a 50mm f/1.4; No weather sealing
Had two bad copies so far, both inconsistent focusing especially at apertures from F1.4 to F2.8. Using a high quality, sturdy tripod, taking photos of the exact same thing will result in front focus in one, back focus in the next, and maybe one (or two if I'm really lucky) sharp one out of 5...
