Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Review

One of the nicest things about Sigma lenses is that they come with a padded pouch, instantly suggesting that the manufacturer feels the lens is worth protecting. Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 is no exception, boasting an enormous front element and a .
Pros:
  • Imposing presence
Cons:
  • Distinctly heavy

Sigma EX: A capable telephoto macro lens

This telephoto macro lens was the first lens I purchased for my DSLR. It was intended for insect macrophotography, and has not disappointed. At around f8, the lens is very sharp; it is softer wide open, but this is not a problem for macros as the depth of field at f2.8 is too shallow anyway.
Pros:
  • Sharp image and 1:1 magnification
Cons:
  • Clunky focusing system

Worth Every Penny

Let me start by explaining my score of 4 on image quality. If I had the option I would give it a 4.8 rather than a perfect 5. When the aperture is wide open at f/1.4 images get 'creamy all over'. But with the right light this effect can be absolutely stunning!
Pros:
  • Bokeh
  • Focus Speed
  • Sharpness
Cons:
  • 77mm filters

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM review

What a whopper! Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 is twice the size and weight of other similar lenses and has a colossal front element promising superior peripheral brightness (reduced corner shading) and improved contrast at wider lens apertures. The finish and the controls are rock-solid.

Performance & handling Prime lenses are about as simple as can be in terms of handling. You have just two controls – the focus ring and (depending on your lens mount) the AF/MF switch.

This is the first Sigma 50mm f/1.4 prime lens for 4/3 DSLRs, a tele photo lens in the focal length of 100mm equivalent to portrait lens in medium distance. A superb lens of optical quality and design, fast focus in silent with HSM.
Pros:
  • Fast aperature in f/1.4 with beautiful bokeh
  • Short lens barrel and well balance of weight by hand-held with camera body
  • Fast focus speed in silent with HSM
Cons:
  • None

AWESOME!!!!

BUY IT NOW, save yourself from the Canon 50mm lineup and get even somewhat better quality than the prestigious 50mm "L" lens... Canon's is good/great, but after some review this one has the upper hand in 50mm (only this range, "L" is preferred on all others for me)... can't wait for the 5D MK2...
Pros:
  • Inexpensive
  • sharp at 1.4
  • and great background blur
  • blows away my former Tam** SP F2.8 lens
  • ultra fast focusing on my 50D
  • a great pair for portraits
  • made my photo shoot go easy the other day and it made it hard to pick which photos to use
  • THE WERE ALL GREAT!!
Cons:
  • its not a 1.2
  • ummm
