Nikon NIKKOR Z DX f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

It's easy to get carried away and lose sight of just how far we've come in the smartphone world. Apple's iPhone 14 is 7.8 millimeters thick but can communicate directly with satellites, boasts photographic talents that eclipse dedicated cameras and action cams, and does so starting at just $799.

Improved low-light camera performance, Clever safety features (you hope you won't need)

Improvements feel evolutionary, eSIM may prove a headache, iPhone 13 offers much the same for $100 less

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

The iPhone 14 is better than its predecessor, but it's also more expensive and doesn't have many significant upgrades.

Even faster, with a better camera and more features.

Charger is optional. Lacks telephoto lens. Price has been increased.

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

New Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

This general-purpose, ‘walkaround’ lens is most likely to be purchased with the Z50 body, for which it is an ideal partner. It can also be fitted to a Z6 or Z7 body provided that camera has the latest firmware – but the frame will be cropped to 23.6 x 15.8 mm size, which makes the exercise a bit...

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

The Nikon Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR complements Nikon’s APS-C format mirrorless cameras perfectly. As well as being the most affordable Nikon Z-mount lens currently available, it’s small, light and extremely capable.

Good image quality, Light and compact

No focus scale, Single control ring

New Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

I have really enjoyed this lens so far. It is small and light and hardly realize it is there on my Z6. I have used this lens to do a number of sunsets and have even had a couple of them shown on our local Television News Weather reports. This is a really fine lens and very complementary to my Z6.

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

We have here a compact, low price, high-performance lens that really sets the bar very high for "plastic fantastic" standard zooms. It even gives many prime lenses a run for their money.

Outstanding sharpness, Approaching zero distortion, Compact and light, Fast accurate AF, Very low CA, Modest vignetting, Pleasant, smooth bokeh, Great VFM, Fantastic handling, Built-in VR

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue

New Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens review

Much of the Nikon Z 50’s appeal is its petite form factor and the Nikon Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR (35mm equivalent) doesn’t hamper that in the slightest. It’s tiny, it’s featherweight and it’s sure to prove popular with travel and street photographers alike.

Super-compact size, Impressive minimum focus distance, Customizable control ring

Max aperture only f/6.3 at full zoom, Plastic build may disappoint some, Narrow focus ring could prove fiddly
