Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens - Brand New review

It's easy to get carried away and lose sight of just how far we've come in the smartphone world. Apple's iPhone 14 is 7.8 millimeters thick but can communicate directly with satellites, boasts photographic talents that eclipse dedicated cameras and action cams, and does so starting at just $799.

Improved low-light camera performance, Clever safety features (you hope you won't need)

Improvements feel evolutionary, eSIM may prove a headache, iPhone 13 offers much the same for $100 less

Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens - Brand New review

The iPhone 14 is better than its predecessor, but it's also more expensive and doesn't have many significant upgrades.

Even faster, with a better camera and more features.

Charger is optional. Lacks telephoto lens. Price has been increased.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens - Brand New review

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm F1.8S Lens JMA102DA review

The Nikon Z 35mm F1.8 S is a solid medium-wideangle lens for the Z series, which offers excellent sharpness and pleasant handling characteristics on the Z6 and Z7. Low light fans might miss a wider aperture, and optically, the 35mm cannot compete with its (cheaper) cousin the Z 50mm f1.8 S, but for...

Low-light or wide-aperture fans that need sharp images at fast apertures

Portrait fans who might be bothered by the colored fringing in out of focus areas; those requiring the absolute fastest autofocus; video shooters looking for linear focus response

Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm F/1.8S Lens JMA102DA review

Nikon’s full-frame Z-series f/1.8 primes are very impressive as a group and the Nikkor Z 35mm F1.8 S, which was the first to be introduced, makes a great addition to your kit bag.

Compact design, Superb image quality, Near silent operation in video

Expensive, but quality doesn't come cheap, Needs the correct embedded profiles to remove vignetting at wide apertures

Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens - Brand New review

What a dilemma. Discounting the price, this is an amazing lens that reaches the very highest level of quality. However, there are many lenses not that far behind, almost as fast, even at f/1.4 where the choice widens considerably. These are a fraction of the price of the Nikkor Z.

Outstanding sharpness, Virtually zero CA, Excellent flare resistance, Excellent handling, Quality manufacture, Custom functions for L-Fn button, Sublime handling of point light sources, Virtually no distortion, Beautiful bokeh effects

Huge price tag, Weight, Screw thread lens hood

Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens - Brand New review

While it's a shame that picture and sound quality haven't been upgraded, the iPhone 13 was great in these regards and the iPhone 14 is, too Excellent display Admirable headphone performance Solid build quality No upgrades to picture or sound Familiar design Notch is still present

Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Lens - Brand New review

Apple's latest non-Pro iPhone is superb - it's just that it's strikingly similar to last year's effort.

Still an incredible smartphone, Brilliant battery life gets a bit better, Excellent camera system gets a bit better

Last year’s Pro hardware, Wireless charging slow by modern standards, No USB-C; it’s now well overdue
