I had a very sharp canon 100mm macro with my last camera and it was a fantastic lens which produced excellent macro and portrait shots. This lens blows it away totally. Im using it on a D600 FX camera and the results are outstanding, exceptionally sharp and no visible CA or distortion.
Well, not to be confrontational or anything, but the guy who said this is inferior to the Tamron 90 is on crack, NO off-brand lens can compare to a mid-to-high-range Nkon or Canon lens. This lens is far sharper than any third-party lens.

The Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED ($984.95) is a lens that macro photographers are sure to lust after. Its fairly compact, can focus close enough to project life-size images onto a full-frame image sensor, and its optical stabilization system and f/2.8 aperture make low-light use a reality. It's one of the sharpest lenses that we've seen for the Nikon camera system, and earns Editors' Choice honors. The Micro-Nikkor measures 4.6 by 3.3 inches (HD), weighs 1.6 pounds, and supports 62mm front filters. It supports 1:1 magnification at its minimum (12-inch) focus distance, which means that the size of the object that the lens projects on the camera's image sensor matches the object's real-life size. Some shooters may prefer a macro lens with a longer working distance, like the Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM ($1,799.00 at Amazon) , which gives you about 6 extra inches from your subject at 1:1 magnification, but the Sigma lens is much larger and heavier (8 by 3...
The Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED captures sharp images and is capable of true 1:1 macro magnification, making it a clear Editors' Choice.

awesome product :d
I would like to say this Lens is Worth a buy for Macro and Portrait enthusiast. Although price seems a big leap compared to its Tamron and Sigma counterparts, none of them can match its performance in image quality and Bokeh.
I am a Professional Wildlife Photographer of many years. I use this lens in conjunction with Nikon D3X and full frame camera bodies. It is important to me to consider the artistic limitations of my lenses; I work closely in tandem with Nikon's 200mm Macro lens which is excellent.
Durable; Lightweight; Sharp Focus

This is a fantastic little mini short-range telescope, basically. Others complain of focus "breathing" which makes them have to recompose the shot. Seems moving the tripod slightly isn't that big of a deal. That's what composing my shot is a lot of doing anyway.
Fast / accurate auto-focus; Nice Bokeh; Strong Construction
Focus "breathing"
