In terms of quality, flare, and resolution, this is the finest DX lens Nikon has made to date.
Pros:
 • Still testing
 • However, this lens, so far, is nothing but amazing
 • I would say it might be one of the best DX lens Nikon has made to date - at least at the long end
 • At 10' the 80mm covers 2' x 3'
 • Some very slight pincushion distortion
 • Very slight.
Cons:
 • I see some barrel distortion at 16mm - maybe 3-4%
 • Pretty typical for almost all 16mm lenses out there and ALL wide angle zooms
 • At 80mm there is also a very small amount of pin cushion distortion - certainly less than 1%
 • There is also some vignetting at 16mm.

The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR ($1,069.95) is available as a kit lens along with the pro-grade D500 , but its build and optical quality exceed your typical starter lens. It captures more light than an 18-55mm , and also sports a longer zoom range.
Pros:
 • Sharp
 • Compact design
 • 5x optical zoom
 • Image stabilization
 • 1:4.5 magnification ratio
Cons:
 • Expensive
 • Noticeable distortion
 • Some edge softness
 • Dim corners at maximum aperture
 • Not compatible with some older D-SLRs

Best kit lens for the DX format

Best kit lens for the DX format. It's sharp for a zoom lens. Yes, it's variable aperture, but it's still f/4 at 80mm for crying out loud. Consider this a fixed f/4 lens, the 2.8 is a bonus at 16mm. Naysayers will complain that it's too much plastic. I own it, and I think it feels great.

Nikon 16-80mm f/2.8-4E VR Review

Recently I've been experiencing one of those existential photo crises. Low motivation, cliché results, slumping Instagram likes. When I get bummed about my photography I do what any self-respecting unprofessional photographer would do – put on some soft jazz, pour myself a fine single malt, then...

Nikon 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR DX AF-S Nikkor

I purchased this lens to go with my D7200. I have mostly been an FX user the last 4 years and currently also own a D750 and D800. My interest in going back to the DX camera and lenses started with using the D7200 as a way to get extra reach for my telephoto lenses such as the Nikkor 80-400mm VR and...
Pros:
 • Very Sharp with exellent contrast
Cons:
 • Distortion (both barrel and pincushion

Very happy.

I'm very happy with this lens.
Significantly lighter than my previous 17-55
Very useful focal range as a general walkabout lens.
Nice and sharp with pretty fast focus that needed no fine tuning.

Excellent Lens

Lens is excellent, and works perfectly. Noticed that the lens probably was a Japan lens, as manual was in Japanese. But doesn't affect the quality of the lens
