The problem with some reviews is that you get bad info. The 70=300 can never outperform this F2.8 in low light!!! A classic that performs well in low light. The 70-300 is only good in well light environments. I know, I have used both.

This lens is one of Nikon's best kept secrets. The 180mm is a light-weight (and considerably less expensive) alternative to one of Nikon's 2.8 zooms. If you don't mind sneaker-zooming, it's an amazing piece of glass.
Consistent Output; Lightweight; Rugged
"We bought this bag (the version without the flag) in 2008 so have had alot of experience with it. We needed it for travelling. I do trip videography and work as I go along so I take a fair bit of equipment with me when I travel. This bag fits everything I need plus more.
I mean what can you say, it's a Nikon Lens and this 180mm is a classic lens, great for portraiture. Just a really high quality lens. This lens should be grouped with the "Must Have Lenses" for Nikon.
You can buy first after you can read review . That much good lens you are reading reviews now. I shot this lens and 300mm f2.8 I checked results. I thought I shot with 300mm .2.8 I shocked it was 180mm 2.8 . I love this lens ( for giving idea ) my first lens for buy .

Mine is the AF 180mm ED non D model. I would have given this lens a perfect score if I had not been owner of a Nikon 180mm 2.8 ED ai-s before. This MF lens was sharper at f/2.8 and completely free of chromatic aberration and fringing.Bokey at 2.8 was a dream.
Very well built; Sharpness from f/4,exceptional lens after f/4; good bokey
chromatic aberration and color fringing f2.8
