Kinect Sports Rivals is a good game on the Xbox One but it's not the game that successfully turns Kinect into a true gaming medium.

Kinect Sports Rivals is the follow-up to Xbox 360's two Kinect Sports titles, which tried and failed to do for Microsoft's motion control camera what Wii Sports did for Wii. The games reportedly sold well, but didn't do much to establish Kinect as a must-buy peripheral.

Microsoft introduced Kinect Sports in 2010 as a way for Xbox 360 owners who just picked up the Kinect accessory to experience a variety of sports-themed mini-games, which included Bowling, Table Tennis and Boxing.

But with my experience with other Kinect titles, I knew what to do. First, I made sure I had several hours in the day free when I knew there wasn't going to be too much foot traffic through the living room. I moved the coffee table. I moved the central table over the coffee table for extra space.

Kinect Sports Rivals is the biggest next gen video game release of the year. This is the game that shows what the Xbox One, and the new Kinect sensor can do. Kinect Sports Rivals impresses right out of the gate. It scans your face and provided a video game representation.

While there is Skype, Xbox Fitness, signing in with your face, scanning QR codes or using your voice to navigate, there haven't been any (meaningful) game reasons to use your Kinect 2.0 on the Xbox One.

If you don't like Kinect there isn't near enough here to change your mind. If you enjoy Kinect, this is a solid enough game to get started on in a new generation of gaming with Xbox One.

We were promised big things with Kinect for Xbox One - higher definition body tracking, more responsiveness, a wider field of view, and the ability to track up to six skeletons at once - but so far, there hasn't been much in the way of software to put it to good use.
