Huawei has been making a lot of noise this year about its Android flagships, most recently making a pitch to oust the iPhone X or Galaxy S9 from your pocket with the P20 Pro. Weirdly, though, that phone isn't officially coming to the US.

Apple and Google may have machine learning, but Huawei has artificial intelligence. The Mate 10 Pro is the first phone with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), letting it run AI computations with greater efficiency than a CPU or GPU. The Chinese company had hoped that this would be the year when it would finally be able to break into the US market and compete with Apple and Samsung. But days before it was due to make its big partnership announcement with AT&T, the deal fell apart due to pressure from the US government.

Aside from some big faults in the camera department, the Mate 10 Pro is a great phone. It's got everything you could think of, from a gorgeous and water-resistant build, a near bezel-less design, and gorgeous AMOLED display as well as plenty of software features worth talking about.

The Mate 10 Pro looks great in photos with the sleek glass frame and small bezels. Yet, as a glass phone, it picks up fingerprints to a maddening degree. The decision to go with glass on this phone doesn't even have a functional component like wireless charging.

A few months ago, Huawei passed Apple to become the second largest smartphone maker in the world, (Samsung is number one). Its latest flagship handset, the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, comes complete with its own homegrown silicon that Huawei claims should make its smartphone the most intelligent.
