Gran Turismo Sport is a curious beast. While it will undoubtedly appeal to the millions of fans it has accrued since the series' inception in 1997, it's also very clear that in terms of evolution, Polyphony Digital isn't necessarily all that worried about taking steps forward.

Gran Turismo developer Polyphony Digital has slowly developed the series' online component through the years, but now it's focusing on online play. GT Sport goes beyond the predominantly single-player past of its numbered installments, but doesn't go so far as to carve out an entirely new identity.

The Sportsmanship Rating breaks down though with how points are tallied. If there is a collision, both parties are punished no matter who is at fault. In theory, if you're actively trying to avoid accidents, your rating should raise no matter what.

Gran Turismo Sport looks set to kickstart a new era for Polyphony Digital's long running series. In partnership with the FIA and with an officially sanctioned esport set up within the game, the series' self-description as a driving simulator is something of a misnomer.

From its very first moment, Gran Turismo Sport floods the player with a melancholic symphony of sound and picture that takes you back to the racing days of old. I say racing because that's what it's all about, not merely waltzing past mistake-prone AI on a quest to attain the next driver level.
