The Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 is one of the more unusual lenses in the Canon lens lineup - it is one of three tilt-shift ( TS ) lenses. Shift lenses allow you to compensate perspective distortions (converging verticals) by shifting the optical path off its horizontal axis.
The Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 ($1,399 direct) is one of those lenses that photographers often think about adding to their arsenal, but are reluctant to do so as it isn't an everyday optic.
Extremely sharp; Tilt and shift capability; Lockable adjustments
Manual focus only
I'm advertising professional photographer since 1980 and large and medium format is what I used in this time since I have my second Canon, (my first was a Canon F1 in 1978, after that I switch to Nikon for a while) the new 5D, just after his launch into the market, I saw the TS90 in Canon's website...
Here's a few pics I've taken with it: http://automotomedia.net/showthread.php/82-Canon-90mm-TS-E-fun-for-taking-shots-of-cars-motorcycles! Rented a 45 and didn't like the image quality. This lense was considerably better and tack sharp when not tilted/shifted.
Light; Compact; SHARP
None for me
The lens is super sharp and easy to learn to use.
I used the older version of the 90mm t-s for years. The wear of daily use made it just about unusable, despite Canon's repair of the gearing. I haven't yet examined the files to check for optical improvement, but am extremely pleased by the greater resolution of the controls.
despite of ordinary glas material (no L-series) this lens has exceptional sharpness - but the best thing about it is the unsharpness! things out of focus get blured in a special way, not seen by any other lens - even if you stop down to f11!
this lens has no competitor
rotating front element; tiny shift & tilt knobs
This lens , usually bought for product photography has recently become favoured for the special effect of exaggerated limited DOF (depth of field). i.e. you not only extend DOF considerably (effective DOF) you can go the other way and limit it for special effects ( like making people look like...
Consistent Output; Versatile
Difficult to Clean; No weather sealing; Slow Focus
The TSE 90mm is an excellent lens producing super sharp, clean images on my 5D Mark II. I use this for mostly architectural detail work, the lens is very well built and very small in size by compared today's newer lenses.
Superior build quality; Super-sharp images
