I've been intrigued by Canon's EOS M6 mirrorless camera ever since a trip to Florida last year when I saw a YouTuber vlogging with it. I was impressed by the Canon M6's compact size as well as the quality of the video footage he created when I viewed it later.

Canon EOS M6 Mark II Mirrorless Camera with 15-45mm Lens M6IIKISB review

Although Canon has opted to use the Mark II badge rather than EOS M7, the M6 Mark II makes some significant steps up from the EOS M6. In most respects, I’m very impressed by what the Canon EOS M6 Mark II can do.

Canon EOS M6 Mark II review: Do megapixels matter?

Looking for the most resolution without going to full frame? The new Canon EOS M6 Mark II might be your best bet. With 32.5 megapixels, its sensor has almost a third more pixels than the much more common 24MP and 26MP APS-C sensors from Sony and Fujifilm. It’s the first big leap in resolution for crop-sensor cameras in several generations, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a worthy investment. Megapixels alone aren’t enough to sell a camera these days, and unfortunately the $850 M6 Mark II falls short in other areas. Given stiff competition from more established systems, it’s a hard sell. The Canon EOS M6 Mark II is a very compact and lightweight mirrorless camera, looking much like the company’s G Series point-and-shoots. It measures 4.7 x 2.8 x 1.9 inches and weighs 14.4 ounces without a lens It uses the EF-M mount, and there are still only eight native EF-M lenses from Canon. Fortunately, there’s an adaptor available that lets you attach the zillions of EF lenses floating around ...

Canon EOS M6 Mark II

It's for those reasons we continue to recommend the Fujifilm X-T30 and Sony a6400 more highly for photographers shopping for a mirrorless camera. The M6 Mark II itself isn't too far behind, and if Canon can better support it with native lens options, its appeal should broaden.
Pros:
  • High-resolution 32.5MP sensor
  • 14fps burst rate
  • Quick, accurate autofocus
  • Face and eye detection
  • Flip-up LCD
  • 4K video
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Cons:
  • EVF isn't built in
  • Sensor isn't stabilized
  • Native lens library lacks premium options
  • Dumbed-down video options
  • Pricey

Canon EOS M6 Mark II Review

The EOS M6 Mark II marks a big step forward for Canon's APS-C mirrorless system, but the available lenses aren't as appealing as those offered by Fujifilm and Sony. If you were worried that Canon would ignore its APS-C mirrorless camera series after the introduction of the full-frame EOS R, your anxiety should be somewhat lessened by the EOS M6 Mark II ($849.99, body only), which debuts just about a year after the EOS R. It sports a new sensor with class-leading 32.5MP resolution, better 4K support, and improved autofocus compared with the last generation, the most recent model being the EOS M50. It's the best mirrorless camera Canon has made to date, but enthusiasts may be turned off by a scarcity of premium lens options. Where's the EVF? The EOS M6 Mark II comes with a price tag that's decidedly not entry-level—just $50 less than the Sony a6400 or Fujifilm X-T30, two cameras that are all but equal, and our Editors' Choices for shoppers looking in this price range. But it's missing one big feature offered by the competition—a built-in viewfinder—a design choice I think is a misstep. You can add an external viewfinder, but it's a bit of a cl...
