Canon EOS 90D review: Is this 32-megapixel DSLR the perfect match?

At a glance Canon's latest enthusiast DSLR doesn't appear that different to the outgoing 80D. But with a large bump in resolution and burst shooting it's an altogether different beast. Add 4K video shooting and this versatile shooter looks like it will reign as the mid-range master for 2019 and beyond. But treat it with some caution: the high resolution high-stakes does mean grain at higher ISO settings, while moving subjects are more challenging too.

Vari-angle screen is very useful; Capable autofocus system for still and moving subjects; Video capture is now 4K capable; High-resolution images are miles beyond casual cameras/phones;

Single SD card slot; No in-body stabilisation; Autofocus points don't always illuminate; High resolution can mean caution when shooting any moving subject; Limited autofocus options in live view mode;

Canon EOS 90D review: Keeping the DSLR relevant

As each new mirrorless camera continues to one up the last, the DSLR is trying desperately not to be relegated to the bargain bin. Armed with Dual Pixel Autofocus (DPAF) and a 10-frames-per-second burst speed, the $1,200 Canon EOS 90D is the embodiment of Canon’s promise that DSLRs will remain relevant in the mirrorless era. While the best mirrorless cameras outclass most DSLRs when it comes to continuous shooting speed, 10 fps is anything but slow and a decent step up from the EOS 80D. Importantly, it’s also an additional 2 fps faster than the Nikon D7500, despite the 90D having 12 more megapixels. And thanks to DPAF, in live view the 90D almost feels like a mirrorless camera, if you can ignore the heft of the it. Housing the same 32.5-megapixel APS-C crop sensor as the mirrorless EOS M6 Mark II, the 90D, on paper, offers specifications to put it in league with the best DSLRs. But, that still leaves the question: Can the 90D offer enough perks to warrant buying a heavier DSLR instead ...

Excellent speed; Dual Pixel Autofocus; Uncropped 4K; Comfortable design; Excellent battery life;

Heavy; Small buffer; Tracking and eye AF struggles;

Canon EOS 90D review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Canon EOS 90D review

The iPhone 14 isn’t much of an upgrade over the iPhone 13, but it’s still a great device and an upgrade for anyone coming from the iPhone 11 or older.

Great camera, Good battery, Emergency features are cool, Still excellent performance

Display could use some upgrades

Canon EOS 90D review

It's easy to get carried away and lose sight of just how far we've come in the smartphone world. Apple's iPhone 14 is 7.8 millimeters thick but can communicate directly with satellites, boasts photographic talents that eclipse dedicated cameras and action cams, and does so starting at just $799.

Improved low-light camera performance, Clever safety features (you hope you won't need)

Improvements feel evolutionary, eSIM may prove a headache, iPhone 13 offers much the same for $100 less

Canon EOS 90D review

The Canon 90D is a good option for sports and wildlife photography. Image quality is good overall, and its decently high maximum shooting speed, combined with its fast maximum shutter speed, make it easy to capture clear images of fast-moving subjects.

Comfortable to use., Good overall image quality., Decently fast maximum continuous shooting speed., Good autofocus performance in photography.

Bulky construction., Some controls feel a little sluggish., Image sharpness can decrease at high ISO levels.

Canon EOS 90D

If you find yourself hating the EVF experience, well, there's the EOS 90D. It's got everything you love about your 60D, 70D, or 80D. I just think it's a camera you should buy because of intent rather than inertia.

New 32.5MP image sensor; 10fps capture with iTR tracking; Vari-angle LCD; Some dust and splash protection; Optical viewfinder; Mirrorless-quality autofocus for 4K video

Cramped rear dial; Omits sync socket; Single memory card slot

Canon EOS 90D Review

It's been years since the release of Canon's most recent midrange APS-C SLR, 2016's 80D, so the new EOS 90D ($1,199, body only) isn't unexpected. It offers some significant new tech, including a 32.5MP sensor with support for 4K video, improved autofocus both in the viewfinder and Live View, and some slight ergonomic improvements. The upgrades aren't significant enough for us to consider it the actual replacement for the EOS 7D Mark II, which is still on sale with a more rugged build and better-feeling controls, but the 90D is an attractive camera for customers happy with the features and feel of the 80D and earlier models. We recommend that buyers looking at SLRs also consider mirrorless options, but if you absolutely prefer an optical viewfinder, the 90D doesn't disappoint. Tried and True The 90D doesn't stray from the design philosophy that has ruled the series for generations. It's an SLR-shaped SLR, finished in basic black, with a swing-out touch LCD and optical pentaprism v...

The Canon EOS 90D offers a new sensor with significantly more resolution than its predecessor, but competing mirrorless cameras have an edge in autofocus performance.
