The Canon 85/1.8 prime lens is inexpensive and lightweight. It is a very good portrait lens for a film or full-frame Canon digital SLR and a great portrait/telephoto lens for a Canon small-sensor digital SLR, such as the Canon Digital Rebel XTi (Black) , ( compare prices ) ( review ).

Canon EF 85/1.8 USM Review

The Canon EF 85/1.8 USM is a very good lens. It's one of Canon's best lenses and it's certainly near or at the top of the list of Canon's best value lenses. It's far and away better in all respects than any comparably priced zoom lens, and probably arguably better than any zoom lens regardless of...

Canon EF 85 mm f/1.8 USM

If you own a Canon 35-mm reflex camera nowadays your selection of classic portrait 85 mm lenses is really large. The list can be started by the expensive but splendid EF 85 mm f/1.2L USM II – a lens you would look for in vain in other systems.
Pros:
  • well-made casing
  • very good image quality in the frame centre
  • good or decent image quality on the edge of APS-C sensor and full frame
  • lateral chromatic aberration corrected splendidly
  • low distortion
  • slight astigmatism
  • sensibly low vignetting on APS-C
  • fast and efficient autofocus
  • good...
Cons:
  • noticeable longitudinal chromatic aberration
  • modest accessory kit
  • lack of repeatability of particular specimens

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens Review

Looking for a good value in a small, light, great performing, fast lens ? Try the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens. The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens is relatively inexpensive but yields very good image quality. It is reasonably sharp wide open, but really shines from f/2.8 on.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM review by sjp010

This is really a great lens. I remain blissfully unaware of what life is like for 85L shooters, but I have a hard time imagining how much better it really can be. I guess an extra stop is important, but for 4x the cost I don't think I'll ever try it - the 85/1.8 is too good in so many categories.
Pros:
  • Great IQ
  • great AF
  • great build
  • great value
Cons:
  • That Canon hasn't managed to replicate this lens at 50mm

Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM

Canon's EF 85mm f1.8 USM is a classic portrait lens for both full-frame and cropped bodies. The longer focal length allows you to stand a little further away than the 50mm models, and also accentuates the blurred background effect.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Retest @ 15mp / Review

There isn't really much to talking regarding the build quality of the lens - the outer lens barrel is made of high quality plastics combined with a metal mount. The broad, rubberized focus ring operates pretty smooth. The physical length of the lens remains constant regardless of the focus setting.
