This lens is a "always on the camera" lens - it's wide enough for taking pics of landscapes, groups of people and you can go rather close with it too - it's my new Allrounder --- on my 5DII I can work undercover because it is so so unspectacular - which works for me!
Pros:
- very compact - good usage for street photography - f 2.8 is fully usable but best results with f5.6
- autofocus is quick,exact and nearly quiet
Cons:
- Build is far away from L but much better than the 1.8/50 II
- so it's good enough for normal usage

The Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM is the company's first 'pancake' lens, designed to be as small and light as possible. Measuring just 22.8mm thick, it protrudes to roughly the same degree as the grip on many DSLRs, and at 130g you'll hardly notice it when mounted.

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens
The 40mm "pancake" lens from Canon is the first prime pancake lens that Canon has released. I purchased this lens about 5 days ago, and I took it with me on vacation to Asheville, NC. I used it to do some street photography on my EOS 70d.

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM - Full Format Review / Test Report
Canon is the only major Japanese camera manufacturer who has been shy of entering the mirrorless market (as of the time of this review). So far their reps always argued that it is possible to design smallish APS-C DSLRs that are also able to compete on the size and weight side.

A low-profile lens for street photography, suited for full-frame cameras...
