Pictures are amazing and portability is great

Bought this impressive little lens with a Canon SL1. Makes my camera feel even smaller. Pictures are amazing and portability is great. Good at night shots and even better for portraits. Focus is not as fast and quiet as the new18-55mm STM that comes with the SL1, but its still a great lens.

Great value starter lens

This is my second of these. It is better value, better build, and picture quality than the basic 50mm Canon lens. It's a tough little thing and I use it about 80% of the time compared with my other lenses.

Compact and easy to transport

The 40mm is always ready for use, it is so thin it is almost a mirror cover, but whip it out and snap snap away, yes it may not be the best lens in canons line up, but sheer conveinence it wins hands down. It has good bokeh and can get quite close to a subject without distortion of the lines.

Amazingly Nice!

I bought this lens to go with the RP body (with adapter). Lens and adapter is shorter/smaller than the smallest RF mount lens offered presently. RP hasnt arrived yet, but on my 5DmkIII Im getting results far beyond the price of the lens. Almost perfectly sharp, corner to corner, wide open.

I should say this is a great value for what it is: a sub-$200, fast 40mm EF lens with well regarded sharpness stats even wide open. Where the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is a huge letdown is in the realm of video. There is distinct and audible autofocus hum that is recorded on your video.

Sharp, compact and good value for money

Bought for my 6D so I could take it to work, have a compact light package but still being full frame. People might sniff at the fact the lens is only 2.8 but for most every day uses this is all you need.

The rorty, shorty forty is a winner

I didn't buy the nifty fifty due to its somewhat low build quality. So when this lens was announced in the 'cheap enough not to really worry' price bracket, I snapped one up. I think with the EF 40mm pancake, Canon have the balance right. It's not an 'L' lens but does have a metal mount.

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM

The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM ($199.99 direct) lens is one of the smallest you'll find for Canon cameras . Its pancake design barely juts out from a camera when mounted. It can be used on full-frame and APS-C D-SLRs, and provides smooth autofocus for video recording when paired with the EOS Rebel T4i...
Pros:
  • Extremely compact
  • Very sharp
  • Minimal distortion
  • Inexpensive
  • STM focus motor
Cons:
  • Focus-by-wire design
  • Modest f/2.8 aperture

Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM

Super images, especially considering the size and price. On an APS-C body, it's a 60mm "normal" lens that's biting sharp wide open, edge to edge. Keep it in your front pocket. On full frame it's a little soft wide open, but still charming. I hope Canon continues to make lenses like this.
Pros:
  • Awesome "normal" lens for APS-C
Cons:
  • Focus a little slow
